Walberton get first win thanks to an heroic ton from Jacko

It’s rare to see a ton scored at Walberton, but to get one in an evening 20/20 match was truly stunning. Jackson Jr won the toss and elected to bat on a glorious summer evening. Early on the wicket was lively and the home side were two down in the first five overs. This only brought Chris Jackson to the crease and, after a steady start, he began destroying the bowling attack. Anything even slightly loose was crashed to the boundary. In fairness to the Chidham & Hambrook side there was little wrong with the bowling or fielding but Jacko was seeing the ball like a balloon. On strike with 3 balls left, Jacko was 13 short of a ton and unaware of his score. After smashing the next ball for six he was then informed of his tally, adding a little pressure to both himself and the young bowler. 7 needed

from 2, the next ball came in head high and was cooly lofted behind leg for 6. With the sole aim of getting bat on the last ball, Jacko nudged it away for 2 to reach 101 not out in a team total of 164 for 3.

C&H responded admirably including a half century of their own but never quite coped with the heavy run rate and finished on 135 for 4.

Bist blows away Angmering with superb 7 wicket haul

Having lost every Sunday game so far this season Walberton were seriously lacking confidence ahead of the clash with Angmering. However, as the results worsen, the banter and team spirit gains momentum at Walberton, and this drew a true team performance on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Home captain Jackson won the toss and chose to field. Bist struck early for Walberton to leave Angmering 8-1, and things seemed to be going the home side’s way until a solid 4th wicket partnership. A clever field change from Jackson paid off in just 3 balls as the danger batsman edged straight to gully off Lockwood. Bist continued to terrorise the middle order to end with 7 wickets. Phillips also chipped in well with the bowling, and the fielders held their catches with 3 for Harbord, 2 for Kemp, and 1 for Phillips.

Chasing 102 to win, Walberton survived a rapid Angmering attack to reach tea at 17-0. A wicket soon after tea saw Ellis join Brackley in a thrilling 2nd wicket partnership. Ellis survived a number of optimistic appeals for caught behind as well as several laughable dropped catches before he was finally caught on 31. Brackley in contrast never looked in any trouble and played a beautifully controlled innings. Wickets were falling at the other end but far too infrequently for Angmering to hold any real hope of saving the game, and Walberton completed the task set just 5 wickets down with Brackley 31n.o.
